A True Extension of their Home

The clients envisioned an outdoor courtyard that felt like a true extension of their home—an inviting retreat where family and friends could gather, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors. The existing space, however, was long, narrow, and largely underutilized, functioning as little more than a brick walkway beneath a pergola. While clean and structured, it lacked warmth, purpose, and the layered design needed to support both relaxation and entertaining.

Project Overview:

Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward-Woods of The Sisters and Company reimagined this overlooked corridor as a series of thoughtfully defined outdoor living spaces that flow effortlessly from one to the next. To soften the architecture and introduce a sense of intimacy, they dressed the pergola with airy outdoor drapery, instantly creating a more refined, resort-like atmosphere. A welcoming lounge area followed, anchored by woven seating, plush cushions, and a sculptural fire pit that draws people in and encourages lingering conversation.

Throughout the space, abundant greenery and seasonal blooms were layered in using a mix of baskets, planters, and ceramic vessels, bringing depth, texture, and a sense of life to the once-linear walkway. At the far end, the designers introduced a dedicated dining area, complete with a streamlined table, woven chairs, and softly glowing lanterns—perfect for both everyday meals and relaxed entertaining. A sculptural fountain, surrounded by lush plantings, adds a calming sensory element, while a thoughtfully integrated grilling and prep zone enhances the courtyard’s everyday functionality.
